چکیده

We establish convergence to the Kingman coalescent for a class of age-structured population models with time-constant population size. Time is discrete with unit called a year. Offspring numbers in a year may depend on mother's age. 1. Introduction. The well-known coalescent process describes how family lines merge in a sample from a large population, when time is traced backward. It is a continuous time Markov chain which keeps record of branches starting from n leaves and going through n − 1 pairwise mergers toward the root of a so-called ultrametric tree. The number of branches is reduced from k, 2 ≤ k ≤ n, to k − 1 at the rate

Effective population size and population subdivision in demographically structured populations.

A fast-timescale approximation is applied to the coalescent process in a single population, which is demographically structured by sex and/or age. This provides a general expression for the probability that a pair of alleles sampled from the population coalesce in the previous time interval. The effective population size is defined as the reciprocal of twice the product of generation time and t...

Separation of time scales and convergence to the coalescent in structured populations∗

Many biological phenomena can be thought of and modeled in terms of generalized population structure, with individuals having a number of different possible states. Certain groups of states in such models are often connected by “migration” that occurs on a time scale that is much faster than the coalescent time scale. We show that, when viewed on the coalescent time scale, the structure associa...

How to compute the effective size of spatiotemporally structured populations using separation of time scales.

Calculations to derive effective population size become highly complicated when complex population structure is considered. We provide an easy method of computing the effective size of a subdivided population with overlapping generations (a spatiotemporally structured population) using an approximation based on separation of time scales. We also numerically compute the effective size to verify ...

Corridors for migration between large subdivided populations, and the structured coalescent.

We study the ancestral genetic process for samples from two large, subdivided populations that are connected by migration to, from, and within a small set of subpopulations, or demes. We consider convergence to an ancestral limit process as the numbers of demes in the two large, subdivided populations tend to infinity. We show that the ancestral limit process for a sample includes a recent inst...

Inferring Past Effective Population Size from Distributions of Coalescent Times

Inferring and understanding changes in effective population size over time is a major challenge for population genetics. Here we investigate some theoretical properties of random-mating populations with varying size over time. In particular, we present an exact solution to compute the population size as a function of time, [Formula: see text], based on distributions of coalescent times of sampl...
